About
The San Agustin Encampment is a yearly event where approximately forty sixth grade Girl Scouts have the opportunity to learn and interpret Spanish St. Augustine in the 1740s. Each year, the girls go through an extensive interview process, then a day and a half long training, where they briefly learn the history of St. Augustine, the best ways to use first person interpretation, and how to craft their own outfits for the event weekend. Finally, the event weekend includes camping in period appropriate tents, a full day of historical interpretation, a musket and cannon firing, and a sing-a-long event for family members and local Girl Scout troops. The event also offers 10th-12th grade Girl Scouts an opportunity to increase their leadership skills by assisting our adult volunteers in guiding the sixth grade girls though the training and event.
Each year our San Agustin Encampment committee, a group of 30+ adult volunteers, plans and facilitates this event. Many of our committee members were once sixth grader involved in the event and returned as older girls, then joined the committee. The San Agustin Encampment has been providing local Girl Scouts the opportunity to explore and interpret history for more than 25 years.
The event includes Girl Scouts from across Northeast Florida, all in the Gateway Council. Gateway Council includes 16 Florida counties: Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Levy, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns, Suwannee and Union.
